Solar Water Heaters
MISL is making a conscious effort of going green. As a first step it is converting all the heating systems being used at our various locations, including the homes of the Directors, to have solar powered water heaters.
Currently the water heaters used in Pakistan are gas water heaters which use non-renewable fossible fuels. Most houses in Pakistan use 2 or 3 gas water heaters (known locally as geysers). There is a shortage of natural gas at the moment and by 2010 the gas reserves will start dwindling.
There are plans to import gas from Iran -- however this project has been stalled in the negotiation stage for some time.
MISL, being a progressive company, representing some of the largest multinationals in the world has decided as a policy to save on gas and other fossil fuels.

Photovoltaic Cells
We are installing photovoltaic cells as a backup power unit in the first phase. Just to give a small example - even if we are able to save 200 kWh / month, there can be a reduction of approximately 25 tons of greenhouse emissions per year.
It is our goal to use all types of renewable energy technologies and also reduce the consumption of electricity and gas at our facilities. This is not only accomplished by creating more energy but also having "greener" appliances which can save power consumption. As an example, all regular light bulbs have been changed to energy saver lights which include tube lights and compact fluorescent lights. We have also studied the effect of compact fluorescent lights (CFL) on the environment such as the mercury element in a CFL. Since the mercury in a CFL is 6 mg or less hence this is the preffered way to go. It is much better than using regular fluorescent lights where the mercury content is approximately 25 mg.
